What is an altar?
Definition of Altar
An altar is a platform or a table for the presentation of offerings for the pantheon deity, God or Goddess they choose to pray, set their intention to or focus on workings with.
From this sacred space, the practitioner and the witch, shaman or pagan in question can cast spells, manifest waves of abundance, the altar contains representations of the elements of air, earth, fire and water. Placing fruit or other dishes on the altar provides the nourishment of the soul for magickal footsteps of the path forwards.
Approaches on how to set up a personal altar
Designate and choose a space in your home where you are drawn to set up an altar, be it a window sill, coffee table, shelf or a corner.
Select your choice of tools and altar offerings from the pertaining list.
Add natural elements to your altar, not limiting to the elements including wood.
Cleanse bless and smudge your altar and also post pictures of it on the thread below. Show us yours!
Athame - a knife to cut, heal and slice away old ties with the magickal and emotional ties
Besom - The broom to sweep away old vibrations and guiding energies out of the natural space.
Boline - The shape of an athame knife curved in line like that of the crescent moon
Bowl or a Cauldron - a cauldron or a pestle and mortar pot to crush and blend mixtures within
Egg / Jar - for an egg cleanse, eggs are symbolic of the fertility new energies and are extremely good cleansers in shamanic beliefs
Pen, Ink, Pencil and a Notepad - for notes / journalling
Wand - For casting and creation of specific spells along with the elements of Candles, for fire, a bowl of water for water magic
Air - Feathers or the language of bird totems, and earth, crystals, stones, runes, sigils, etc
